Prof. (Dr.) A.S. Yaruingam
Prof. A.S. Yaruingam did his MA, M.Phil., and PhD in Sociology from JNU, New Delhi. He joined the department in 1998 as a lecturer in African Sociology. He teaches African sociology, Research methodology, Theories on International Relations, and Indian Diaspora in Africa. He has four books in his name—one single author and four co-authors. Besides, he has published several research papers in peer review journals on different fields such as religion, culture, diaspora, agriculture, and India’s soft power in Africa.
He has participated in several national and international conferences and seminars as a paper presenter, discussant, and chair of the session both in India and abroad. He has also delivered special lectures on several topics of relevance. Besides He taught at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, for four and a half years. He has completed a major project from ICSSR and 3 minor research projects under the Delhi University academic development program. Under his supervision, 30 M.Phil. scholars and 15 PhD scholars have received the degrees. Besides, under his guidance, three postdoctoral scholars from ICSSR have submitted their thesis.
He has appeared on Rajya Saha TV discussion on the issue of Terrorism and Ethnic conflict in Africa. Professor Yaruingam is also a founder member of the African Studies Association (ASA) of India and its vice president for about 15 years. At present, he is one of the Advisory Executive Members. From 2011 to 2014, he was the Head of the Department. During this period, he organized an international conference, and the conference papers were published. Professor Yaruingam was a member of the SC/ST admission Grievances Committee.
Prof. (Dr.) Suresh Kumar
Suresh Kumar is a Professor in the Department of African Studies at the University of Delhi. He has shouldered the responsibilities of Head of the Department from 2009 to 2012 and from 2015 to 2019. He is the Chief Editor of the Africaindia.org. Professor Kumar is a passionate traveler who has visited forty countries for research and teaching assignments. He has accomplished international projects with NIHSS South Africa, UNESCO Research Group in Brazil, SADC Hashim Mbita Project, Tanzania and nine national projects.
He articulated his opinion on different aspects of Africa before the International Geography Union (2004 & 2008), India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS, 2005, 2011 & 2019), Ronald H. Brown Institute (2008), United Nations Organisation (2012), World Policy Conference (2014, 2016 & 2022), European Commission of African Studies (ECAS, 2014), Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA, 2015), IBSA, BRICKS-IKS (2016, 2018 & 2019) and many others. About 164 articles have been published in different books, journals, and newspapers. He has actively contributed his opinion on India and Africa in the different international media channels of BBC, Aljazeera (English), ABC (USA), Yomiuri Shinbun (Japan) and All India Radio.
Prof. (Dr.) Gajendra Singh
Prof. Gajendra Singh is the former Head of the Department of African Studies at the University of Delhi. He is currently serving as the Chief Vigilance Officer at the University of Delhi. He completed his M.Phil. in 2003 and Ph.D. in 2011, both from the Department of African Studies at the University of Delhi. He began his teaching career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Satyawati College from 2006 to 2015. Since 2015, he has been a faculty member in the Department of African Studies at the University of Delhi. He has been awarded with the prestigious Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Excellency Service National Award in 2018. He has published numerous research papers, contributed chapters to books, and presented papers at both national and international conferences. He is also the Chairman of the University Archive Committee and holds membership in the Indian History Congress and the World History Association, based in Hawaii, USA.
Dr. Rashmi Kapoor
Dr. Rashmi Kapoor is an Associate Professor in the Department of African Studies, University of Delhi. She completed her M.A. and M.Phil. from the Department of Sociology, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi and her Ph.D. is from the Department of African Studies, University of Delhi. Her field of specialization is African Studies and Swahili language. Her research interests include family and society in India and Africa, Swahili language, Diaspora studies, India-Africa relations and gender issues. She has published several papers in the reputed journals, books and newspapers. She has co-edited two books. She is the convener of the Study Group on Human Rights and Refugees of the Department of African Studies. She trained the troops of the 14th Battalion The Mahar Regiment Unit deployed in Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa as part of United Nation Mission for Peacekeeping in Swahili language.
Dr. Sandipani Dash
Dr. Sandipani Dash teaches in the Department of African Studies, University of Delhi. Prior to it, he has taught at Maharaja Agrasen College, University of Delhi, and has worked as a Research Fellow in the Indian Council of World Affairs, Sapru House, and a Research Associate in the Institute for Conflict Management, New Delhi. He is one of the editors of the Indian Journal of African Studies. He has authored books, a number of research papers, media and web articles. He has presented papers in national and international seminars in India and overseas. His research interests include resource politics, regional integration in Africa, and India-Africa relations. He is a member of the Academic Affairs Committee of the India Policy Foundation, New Delhi. He has supervised 5 PhDs. He has been Awarded a Major Research Project on "Kashmir and Abyei in Comparative Perspective."
Dr. Manish Karmwar
Dr. Manish Karmwar is a faculty member at the Department of African Studies, University of Delhi, with 18 years of teaching experience. He holds a Bachelor’s, Master’s, M.Phil., and Ph.D. from the University of Delhi. His research focuses on the Global African Diaspora , Africans in India, and Local & indigenous History. Dr. Karmwar has nineteen research papers in journals, including African Studies Review, African Spectrum, Insight on Africa, Africa Quarterly, Diaspora Studies, Insight on Africa ,Indian Journal of African Studies, The Management Accountant, Yojana, and Journal of Asian and African Studies. He serves as an editor for the Indian Journal of African Studies (IJAS) University of Delhi , IJHIR and Veethika, and is the book review editor for Africa Review. Also, he is the founder of the Graduate Scholars’ Talk Series (GSTS) platform for academic collaboration. He is the Convener of University Diplomatic Dialogue (UDD) at the Department of African Studies. Dr. Karmwar has presented various research papers at National and international conferences and delivered Many invited lectures. Six research scholars are now working on their PhDs under his guidance, while two research scholars have submitted their MPhil dissertations.
