The Department of African Studies, University of Delhi offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program of semester-long coursework hvaing 12 credits. This PhD structure provides scholars with a comprehensive and intensive academic experience in African Studies with the skills and knowledge necessary to analyze, understand and contribute to some of the most significant discussions about African History, Politics, Society, Geography, Economics, and Finance. The program is structured to encourage a better understanding about Africa alongwith providing the practical insights. Currently, the department has over 100 scholars enrolled in the PhD program working on a diverse range of topics.

Over the past five years, student enrollment in the program has shown positive trends. In 2018-2019, there were 8 students, which increased to 16 in 2019-2020. The numbers remained strong with 10 students in 2020-2021, followed by a peak of 18 in 2021-2022, and concluded with 13 students in 2022-2023.
